Eating Disorders … There is Help
There are thousands of reasons that would cause a healthy human being to look in the mirror and see someone else; someone much bigger. The reason could be as small as someone commenting on another person’s appearance or something as big as being bullied by others. Regardless, there are far too many children and adults who suffer from eating disorders like Anorexia, Bulimia, and Binge Eating Disorder. The good news is, there is help. There’s help all over the place, from treatment centers to anonymous hotlines that people with eating disorders can call for advice. Eating disorders are taking the world by storm, unfortunately. There are millions of Americans that have suffered from it and millions more who are still suffering.
Eating disorders are very serious and need immediate attention. These disorders often lead to other problems like medical complications, drug abuse, depression, and more. If it isn’t treated, the eating disorders become fatal.
Thankfully, help is always near. There are several options for someone with an eating disorder. One of which (the best in many opinions) is called a Radar Program. Radar Programs individualize the patients and put them into groups based on that individualization. There are groups that have to do with body image, sexuality, and creative expression. There is training in assertiveness and help to reduce stress.
There are other options such as a 24-hour inpatient treatment program, which is a facility where the patient stays to get treatment for as long as it takes to show improvement. There are outpatient programs and continuing care programs which are held once a week or so that help the patient through support of other patients and professionals. They provide assistance with creating and maintaining treatment plans for the patients. Another option for patients with family issues is a family program. They usually take place on the weekends and provide family support. These sessions help the patient maintain their recovery by sorting out the problems in the family that may have been the subconscious cause of the disorder.
There are also options that don’t involve residential treatment such as therapy and nutritional counseling. Therapy will help the patient figure out why they have the disorder, help raise the patient’s self esteem, and introduce coping skills for stress and pain instead of succumbing to their disorder or other kinds of self harm. Nutritionists will help the patient figure out a meal plan and set goals toward a healthy weight.
Getting help for an eating disorder or any disorder is simple and will be rewarding once recovery has started. Sure, it’s hard and scary at first, but after all is said and done, the patient will feel so much better about themselves with the right treatment plan.
Find an EDA (Eating Disorders Anonymous) hotline or support group in the area and get help. Without help, these disorders are deadly. No one wants to lose someone they love to any kind of disorder.
